Volgograd
Volgograd is what’s known as a “Hero City”. It was awarded the honour as a consequence of its outstanding heroism during World War Two, along with Moscow and St Petersburg. Known then as Stalingrad, a fierce battle took place in the city lasting over 200 days, the Russians eventually emerging victorious. It’s now twinned with the UK city of Coventry which suffered extensive aerial bombardment during the war.
Today, the city has been rebuilt. Peace Street was the first. Nearby, in the memorial Square of Fallen Heroes, an old poplar stands and surveys the now peaceful scene. Also worth visiting are the Alley of the Heroes, which leads to the mighty Volga River, and the Motherland Calls sculpture atop Mamaev Hill. Read more about Volgograd.
