Nizhny Novgorod

One of the notable stops along the Trans-Siberian route, the city of Nizhny Novgorod is a charming riverside settlement.  Once it was closed to foreigners and turned into a significant Soviet military centre known as Gorky.  Now, happily, it has reopened to visitors and welcomes many thousands every year.

Its well preserved Kremlin is a must-see.  It has twelve towers and sits on a hill overlooking the city.  Also worth exploring is the old town, in which you’ll find the charming pedestrian street of ul Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and little cobbled streets like Rozhdestvenskaya ul.  Writer Maxim Gorky was born here in 1868 and there is a museum devoted to his life and works.
