Irkutsk - Ulan-Bator Train

 
The train that goes from Russia to Mongolia or vice versa is actually five carriages (during high periods can be more): the train normally has only one first class carriage (not always available, depends on operational decisions of the Russian / Mongolian railways) and four 2nd class carriages. In high season more 2nd class carriages are added to the train. These carriages are either attached to the Russian train when traveling in Russia or to the Mongolian train - in Mongolia making it look bigger, but there are only a few carriages that cross the border.

Each carriage features 9 compartments, 2 toilets, a boiler for hot drinking water. The train is solid, clean, and well looked after by the attendants, however do not expect any luxury or higher level of service. For those who have upgraded to 1st class, we will buyout the whole 2-nd class compartment if 1st class is unavailable.
 

Meals on the train

There is no dining car. However, each carriage has a hot water boiler that customers can use. You can also get snacks, instant noodles, soups, tea or coffee from the train attendants or station shops. There is also a local non expensive café on the border in Russia offering hot food. We also recommend to buy some food before travelling on this train either in Irkutsk or in Ulaanbaatar. If you are travelling on our Trans-Mongolian tour, our guides are aware that there is no dining car, they warn our clients and always assist our customers with purchases before boarding the train.
