Dear Traveller, |
A Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to all! |
You know we like to do things a little differently here in Russia, so we’ll be celebrating New Year before Christmas.
|
Like the West, we’ll be seeing in the New Year on December 31st. Russians across the country will be charging their
glasses – champagne, of course – to a toast of happiness. President Putin will address the nation and then it’s time
to get the party in full swing.
|
|
Christmas comes along on January 7th and it’s worth the wait! On Christmas Eve, Russians pile a bowl high with
sochivo, a bit like porridge. Everyone grabs a spoon and dips in – we share to demonstrate our solidarity.
The Christmas feasting continues with the classic soups, borsch and solyanka, followed by salads and sauerkraut.
Every celebratory meal needs to end on a sweet note, so there’ll be gingerbread and cookies.
|
It’s a great time to be in Russia, and you’ll be assured a warm welcome if you’re over for a visit. If you can’t
make it this year, why not cook up some Russian dishes in your own kitchen and join us in spirit?
|
Wherever you are, all of us at Go Russia wish you a happy and healthy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Winter’s coming – and where better to spend it than in Russia?
|
Winter is a romantic notion here in the UK, especially in the south. We don’t understand winter because we don’t really get winter. A chill in the air? Maybe. A dusting of powder on the streets until the sun gets up? If we’re exceptionally lucky. Months of grey cloud tha...
