Free talks on Russia: Trans-Siberian railroad – epic journey - 17 March 2009 The Go Russia Expert Team is delighted to announce our next free talk at Pushkin House in London: TRANS-SIBERIAN RAILROAD – EPIC JOURNEY. It is the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway which holds the vast territory of Siberia together. Apart from the cultural highlights and treasures of nature to be found along the route, the travel experts from Go Russia will give you details of accommodation and transport options available in various regions, a wide range of holiday activities, and many other practicalities you need to consider before taking this trip. A Journey With Jonathan Dimbleby: The Producer’s Tale by Ms. Teresa Cherfas In May and June 2008, the BBC’s landmark series about Russia was broadcast to wide critical acclaim. Across seven time zones, the viewer was taken on an epic journey through the world’s largest country and deep into its heart. This is a journey not just across Russia’s awesome landscape but through her turbulent history and rich cultural heritage. Years in the planning, every inch of the journey was plotted and tramped in advance by series producers Teresa Cherfas, and George Carey (who may also be present). Russian Festival Maslenitsa Sunday 1st March 2009 in London Maslenitsa – a free public and family-friendly festival of Russian culture to take place on the banks of the River Thames on Sunday 1 March 2009 from 1 till 6 pm. Offering a unique blend of music, dance and theatre performances, the London Festival Maslenitsa will mark the traditional Russian pre-Lent celebrations. Maslenitsa is akin to a weeklong version of Britain’s Shrove Tuesday, which survived the Soviet period to recently experience a strong revival in Russia. In keeping with home grown traditions various tasty Maslenitsa specialty foods, including the quintessentially Russian food ‘blini’ or pancakes, will be available at the event. Venue: Potters Field Park, SE1 (between Tower Bridge and City Hall).

Rodchenko & Popova - Defining Constructivism Rodchenko & Popova are at the Tate Modern from 12 February 2009: Defining Constructivism will explore the work of Alexander Rodchenko and Lyubov Popova between 1917 and 1929. With over 350 objects, this exhibition charts the evolution of their aesthetics from abstract painting to graphic design and will include their designs for cinema and theatre as well as numerous posters, books, and costumes. Magnificence of the Tsars is at the V&A for a while yet (until 29 March 2009) showing off the grandeur of Imperial Russia. Starting in the 1720s with the lavishly embroidered coats and elaborately patterned silk banyans from the wardrobe of Tsar Peter II, the display will span a period of almost two centuries. Garments on display will include coronation uniforms and regalia of Paul I, Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II and Alexander III. Read more.
